Alexander Go is the central character in a television series I'm developing right now. Expect a pilot written by March.
Go is a mystery wrapped in an enigma and obscured by paradox. He is very good at whatever it is he does. Some poeple who have encountered him recall that he seemed to be a private investigator, or a vigilante, or a secret agent, or a mob enforcer for the Triads. Is he a terrorist? Or a thief? Or perhaps simply a man with a vendetta? No one can seem to agree, and the stories really don't add up.
Commonalities in all the stories involve his signature clothing: an olive-green, wool trench coat; a green and brown scarf; and a somewhat emo-ish haircut. He's definitely Chinese, and when he's not flipping out and killing people, he's quiet, polite and very friendly. He's always quick to introduce himself by name. Some say he talks in broken English with a heavy Chinese accent. Others say his English is so American that they're not sure he speaks Chinese at all. One homeless man reported a Hong Kong/Brit accent.
In one story, he's saving innocents and punishing the guilty. In another, he's ruthless and willing to annahilate anyone that stands in his way. He might be a martial arts expert, or he may prefer to keep his distance and rely on firearms. With all the inconsistancies in this figure of Urban Legend, one question persists: Who is Go?
The answer is far more complicated and startling than you could ever imagine.
I've got four seasons roughly drafted out. That's as long as the show will go for. If it were to last four seasons, it would end after that, because the question that is the title would be completely answered by that point.
Message me if you want spoilers. Otherwise, I'm keeping the story to myself for now.
K. I'm out.

No one, and I mean no one, else in all of literature has ever written characters so deep and truely human. All his stories (my favorite is the Brother Karamazov) are portraits of the characters which inhabit them. The stories also deal a lot with the nature of morality, and of faith, and of many other issues, but the point isn't the issues, it's how the characters, as different, individual human beings handle them.
Ok, so there isn't much in the way of action in his stories, but action's not always the point. The point is that he can invent fictional characters that resonate so heavily with reality. It's like you know all of them personally, like you've seen them, touched them.
Tolstoy's cool, too. But his stuff really is about morality and faith and virtue. Interesting subjects, but I like characters better.
